My prayers have been answered. Clouds have gone away and now it's very HOT :)
I've been going through the built in 3D Max tutorials, I'm picking it up pretty fast. And, gasp!, I've only used 1 plugin so far and it's just a convenience plugin too. So far, the grass really is greener
